City of Irving, TX

Useful Information

The City of Irving is located in the northwest part of Dallas County, midway between Dallas and Fort Worth. During the past years, Irving has experienced a rapid population growth, increasing from 2,600 people in 1950 to the present population (census 2000) of 191,615 residents.  Irving operates under a home rule order adopted in 1952 with the manager-council form of government. Individual city departments operate under the direction of the City Manager who reports to the City Council. The Department of Police operates directly under the supervision of the Chief of Police. Manpower and Staffing: total authorized strength, including sworn and civilian positions, of the Police Department is 482 full-time personnel. Of that number, there are 326 sworn officers. The department is divided into five divisions: Community Services, Operations, Technical Services, Administrative, and Criminal Investigation. Response to requests for police services must be accomplished in conjunction with performing regular patrol duties: traffic enforcement, preventive patrol and court duty. The City encompasses approximately 69 square miles, much of which is available as future development. Currently Irving is the third largest city in Dallas County and the twelfth largest in the State of Texas. All streets, highways, and roadways within the boundaries of the City of Irving must be patrolled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. To fulfill this mandate, the Police Department requires personnel who desire to be a part of a law enforcement agency dedicated to the service and protection of the citizens of a dynamic, growing urban center located in the "Heart of the Metroplex".
