CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS POLICE OFFICER
I. AGE - Must be at least 21 years of age but less than 45 years of age to be hired.
II. GENERAL CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF APPLICANT
1. Must complete and file a legible application with the Civil Service office.
2. Must have a High School Diploma or GED
3. 60 or more college hours with a 2.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale. (must be from a T.C.L.E.O.S.E. approved/accredited school) with the following exceptions:
a) An exemption to the college requirement for 18 (eighteen) months following separation will be granted to honorably discharged veterans who have served for 3 (three) or more years of active duty;
b) Beginning with the 19th (nineteenth) month after receiving an honorable discharge after 3 (three) or more years of active duty through the 36th (thirty-sixth) month, military veterans will be required to complete 30 semester hours or more at an accredited college or university;
c) Currently employed peace officers, with three or more years of service, will be exempted from the college requirement.
4. If time was served in the military, must have received an honorable discharge. Documentation must be with the application.
5. Must intelligently read and write the English language.
6. Must be of good character.
7. Must be a U.S. citizen.
8. Not ever have been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years;
a) Must not have made any false statement in any material fact or practiced, or attempted to practice, any deception or fraud in application, examination or appointment.
b) Must not have been dismissed from public service for inefficiency, delinquency or misconduct.
c) Must appear for all requested examinations and interviews.
III. PHYSICAL CONDITION
- Must be able to pass physical fitness test to the standards established for applicants. This test consists of: Ability to Bench Press 68% of your body weight or 140 lbs. -- Make a Vertical Jump of 16 inches -- Complete a 300 Meter Run in 81 seconds -- Complete a minimum of 19 Push-ups -- Complete 30 Sit-Ups in one minute and -- Run 1.5 miles in the 15 min. 24 seconds allotted.
- Must be able to pass physical exam as determined by appointed Civil Service physician.
a) Mental and Physical Condition. No mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease likely to interfere with safe performance of duties. No loss of body parts or other structural defect or limitation likely to interfere with performance of duties.
b) Eyesight. Telebinocular visual acuity correctable to at least 20/20, field of vision in the horizontal meridian of not less than 140 degrees; ability to distinguish the colors red, green, and yellow.
c) Hearing. Shall not be less than 10/20 in the better ear for conversational tones without a hearing aid.
d) Liquor, Narcotics and Drugs. Shall not be addicted to the use of narcotics or habit forming drugs or the excessive use of alcoholic beverages or liquor. Drug test required by State law.
IV. APPLICANT EXAMINATION AND INVESTIGATIONS
1. Applicants must take and pass a written examination involving skills aptitudes and knowledge important for job performance which does not require a knowledge of police services
2. Accepted applicants will be required to take and pass a polygraph examination.
3. Accepted applicants will be required to take and pass a psychological examination.
4. Investigations that will be conducted and must be acceptable include:
a) criminal records;
b) driving records - (no more than two moving traffic violations/ or preventable accidents, or any combination in the last 18 months; no more than 4 in the last 36 months);
c) credit history;
d) past employment history; and
e) general background with respect to references and others who can verify applicant conduct is consistent with position requirements.
Applicants may be rejected for employment at any point in the screening process.
