Officer Delivers Baby On the Shoulder of the Highway

Anthony Thompson
Field Operations Bureau - Irving Officer Anthony Thompson was working a Saturday dayshift and had just cleared a traffic stop when he was hailed by a second motorist at the same location (eastbound S.H. 183 over Story Rd.). The man was in a very excited state as he beckoned Officer Thompson to his car where his wife needed assistance. When Thompson went to the man's vehicle he found that the woman in the front seat was in an advanced stage of labor, and radioed dispatch that he needed paramedic assistance. However the anxious baby was not going to wait! Less than a minute later Officer Thompson was delivering a baby in the front seat of the car, on the shoulder of a busy highway, with no assistance. As the baby was delivered an immediate danger was realized as ambionic fluid sack was still intact. Realizing the "bag of waters" had not broken prior to birthing and that the baby could get no air, Officer Thompson had to act quickly. He ruptured the sack and cleared the newborn's airway and realized he had successfully helped a mother bring new life into the world! Moments later paramedics arrived and transported both mother and child to a local hospital where both were confirmed to be in good condition. To Officer Thompson, congratulations on a job well done! The professional presence you exhibited and your ability to remain calm and function admirably under such unique and stressful circumstances is commendable.
