Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Complaints

What time limits do I have to make a complaint?

In order to conduct a thorough investigation, your complaint should be filed immediately following the incident, or as soon as possible.

What are the possible outcomes of a disciplinary investigation?

1.  Unfounded - Evidence does not support the allegation.

2.  Exonerated - The allegation is true, but it was lawful and proper.

3.  Not Sustained - There is insufficient evidence to prove or disprove the allegation.

4.  Sustained - There is sufficient evidence to conclude the allegation occurred.

What happens if the complaint is not sustained?

Police officers must be afforded the same rights as citizens.  Therefore, complaints must be supported by sufficient evidence.  If there is not sufficient evidence to sustain the complaint, the officer is notified of the results and no further action will be taken.

Will I be notified on the status of my complaint?

Yes.  You will be notified of the outcome at the conclusion of the investigation.  If you have questions during the investigation, you may contact the Professional Standards Lieutenant or Sergeant at (972) 721-3510.

A note about complaints:

While the Irving Police Department encourages complaints or compliments, it is difficult to conduct an investigation and make a determination based on anonymous information.  If you wish to make an anonymous complaint, in order to assist investigators with the most detailed information, please call the Professional Standards Unit at (972) 721-3510 or 972-721-2555.
