Captain John Thorpe began his career with the Irving Police Department in February 1980. In 1990, he went to work for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, but decided that police work was his calling and returned to the Irving Police Department in June of 1994. He has been assigned to the Patrol Division, Jail Section, Vice/Narcotics Section, and the Criminal Investigation Division. John has served as a field training officer, field training sergeant, and the Criminal Investigation Division. He was selected as the 2006 Supervisor of the year. John was promoted to captain in June 2007. He has a Bachelor's Degree from Dallas Baptist University and in 2006 completed the Management College presented by the Institute of Law Enforcement Administration. John now commands the Special Operations Division, which consists of Tactical, Traffic, Vice and Narcotics Sections.
The Special Operations Division consists of the Traffic, Tactical, Vice and Narcotics Sections. In addition to these police functions, the division manages any needed police involvement for special events throughout the city. The Traffic Section provides targeted enforcement in order to reduce the risk of motor vehicle collisions, investigates hit and run accidents and operates a nighttime DWI enforcement unit. The Tactical Section is trained in warrant service, dignitary protection and high risk operations. In addition to these full time details, this division oversees the bomb technicians, honor guard, and Civic Center security.
