The Irving Police Department’s Victim Services Unit
In 2002, Irving Police Department combined the two Domestic Violence Counselors and the Crime Victim Coordinator under one Supervisor to form the Victim Services Unit. The Unit is part of the Community Services Division and is located in the Irving Family Advocacy Center. The Victim Services Unit contacts victims of domestic violence and other violent crimes with the goal of reducing the short and long-term effects of the trauma experienced as a result of the crime. The services offered to assist victims include crisis counseling, information about normal reactions to trauma, victim’s rights, crime victim's compensation, safety planning, protective orders, how to find out if a suspect has been released from the county jail, the legal process and they are provided referrals and resources to meet their immediate needs (food, clothes, shelter, civil legal advice, counseling, etc.). There are many people who don’t realize they are in an abusive relationship. Victim Services counselors provide education and awareness for community groups, schools, employers and churches about domestic violence, dating violence, how to help a victim of crime and more.
