City of Irving Irving, TX

Preservation & Redevelopment:

The goal of the Preservation and Redevelopment Program is to make the Irving Heritage District a great place to live and work. Our mission is to encourage high quality historic preservation while furthering the physical redevelopment of the district. The Preservation & Redevelopment Program is part of the official Texas Main Street Program, and we strive to implement their approach to downtown revitalization. This five point approach includes historic preservation, economic restructuring, organization, promotion and design.

Irving history covers 100 years. Founded in 1903 as a railroad town by two railroad engineers, we still have much of that early character in our downtown area. Heritage Park is located at the core of the Heritage District. In the park are memorabilia that includes an early train depot and caboose, a water tower, the Caster Cabin, an old Windmill and a replica of an early gazebo. The actual birthplace of Irving is at Main and Rock Island. Lots were auctioned off there, and that is where the original depot was located.

One of our programs goals is to develop a good working relationship with different downtown organizations that are interested in the economic vitality of the area. Groups such as the Irving Downtown Association, the Irving Heritage Society, and the Irving Downtown Residents Association are a perfect example of people that make the area what it is and what it will become. Preservation & Redevelopment helps these groups shape and meet their goals.

The Preservation and Redevelopment Program is committed to the tasks that lie ahead and to the entire community.
