The Irving Police Department is committed to the safety of its residents. For the past two years, the City of Irving has experienced a 14 percent overall decrease in crime. Residents can help the city in its ongoing efforts to achieve even greater success in the area of public safety by taking heed to the following crime prevention tips.
- Get to know neighbors in the community. Neighbors working together to recognize and report suspicious persons or activity are vital elements to crime prevention.
- Lock it and light it. A secure and well-lit home presents a hard target for would-be criminals. Also be sure to keep the garage door closed and locked.
- Do not drive home if being followed. Go to the nearest police or fire station for assistance. Call police if a cell phone is accessible.
- Avoid dark, vacant or deserted areas. Take well-lit, well-traveled routes.
- Always lock vehicles and remove/hide valuables from plain sight.
- Do not let a stranger enter the home. If there is an emergency, offer to call 911 while he/she waits outside.
- Never provide personal information over the phone or through e-mail.
- Take action. Join a Neighborhood Watch or Apartment Watch group.
In the event of an emergency, dial 911. For more crime prevention tips, crime reports, statistics and information, visit www.irvingpd.com.
