Irving to Negotiate Contract for New, State-of-the-Art Animal Shelter

Irving City Council has authorized city staff to negotiate a contract with Wiginton Hooker Jeffry PC Architects to design and provide construction administration for a new, state-of-the-art animal shelter. The initial design meetings for the building will be held in late August.

The $6 million facility will be located on Valley View Lane, between Northgate Drive and Walnut Hill Lane, and will be funded through capital improvement bond funds and gas lease revenues. The animal shelter will be a joint project housing the city’s Animal Services operation and the DFW Humane Society. The facility is scheduled to open summer 2009.

Animal Services continues to enhance its programs and outreach efforts. The animal shelter hosted an Adopt-a-Thon in May where 91 animals were adopted and 22 of the animals were micro-chipped. Animal Services also plans to sponsor a free rabies vaccination clinic on Nov. 3 at Running Bear Park, located at 2601 S. Story Road.

In addition to these efforts, seven animal services officers were recently certified by the Texas Animal Control Association. For more information, call Animal Services at (972) 721-2256, or the DFW Humane Society at (972) 253-3333.
