Irving Maintains Low Water, Sewer Rates
A slight water and sewer rate increase is being proposed in next year’s fiscal budget; however, rates remain among the lowest in the DFW Metroplex. The increase would be conservation based, so residents who use less water would pay less. Additional revenues would fund upgrades to the city’s aging infrastructure.
The proposed rates include an increase in the base rate and higher volume rates for high-usage customers.
Under the proposed increase, the average residential water customer (10,000 gallons a month) would notice about a 4 percent increase in water and 2 percent increase in sewer rates, or about $1.89 more per month. A typical commercial water customer (55,000 gallons a month) would see about a 5.7 percent increase in water and 2 percent in sewer rates, or about $18.21 more per month.
The city will remain aggressive in the area of water conservation. In addition to the implementation of a conservation-based rate plan, other measures being considered include assistance with low-volume plumbing fixtures, landscaping, freeze/rain sensors for irrigation systems and public education.
The proposal will be considered as part of the city’s budget adoption, which is set for Sept. 27. For more information, call Water Utilities at (972) 721-2281, or visit www.cityofirving.org.
