What is NetLibrary?
NetLibrary offers libraries around the world the most comprehensive collection of electronic books, or eBooks, available.
The Irving Public Library, in concert with NetLibrary and the Texas State Library, makes it possible for you to access a wide range of research, reference and reading materials online. NetLibrary eBooks are easy to use. They are accessible from any location. Searching them is fast and efficient. You can search every word in every eBook the library has, as well as search within a particular eBook. This guide will explain how to access the library’s eBook collection directly from the library or remotely via the NetLibrary Web site.
Your library’s eBook collection
The eBooks in the Texas State Library collection were purchased to meet the needs of the general public in libraries across Texas. In addition, when you search the collection, you’ll note an option for accessing "public" eBooks — classic works of literature and history in the public domain.
Accessing the eBook collection
First, think about how you wish to use eBooks. If you only wish to search and browse within your library or through your library’s Web site, you will not need to create an account. In this case, skip to "Finding an eBook" to get started.
If you wish to check out eBooks and/or access them from outside of the library, you will need to create an account that identifies you as a library patron.
Creating an account
Establishing an account allows you to access an eBook remotely.
-
-
Click on Create a Free Account at the top right side of the page.
-
Enter the requested information and click Create Account.
-
You will automatically be logged into the library’s eBook collection.
Logging in
You must log in each time you wish to access an eBook remotely.
-
-
Click on Log In at the top left side of the page.
-
Enter your username and password, then click Log In.
-
You now have access to all eBooks available in the library’s collection.
Finding an eBook
There are two ways to find an eBook, Quick Search and Advanced Search.
Quick Search:
The Search box on the main navigation bar at the top of your browser window performs a quick search, allowing you to locate an eBook by searching keyword, full text, titles, author, or subject.
-
Select an option from the dropdown list on the main navigation bar, such as keyword, full text, title, author, or subject.
-
Enter the search term. Note: to do a phrase search, submit your search in quotes; for example, "the written word".
-
Select Search.
-
Search results are displayed.
Advanced Search:
You can use the Advanced Search option to construct more complicated searches using multiple fields (Title, Author, Full-Text, Keyword, Publisher, Subject, and ISBN). It also allows for the use of Search Operators and limits (publication year, eContent language, and format).
-
Select the Advanced Search link under the Basic Search box.
-
Enter the search text. The Full Text field searches the full text of all eBooks. All other fields search the bibliographic records. Note: To do a phrase search, submit your search in quotes; for example, "the written word".
-
Select Search.
-
Search results are displayed.
Browsing an eBook
You may browse an eBook without logging in. Browsing an eBook is the equivalent of taking a book off the shelf and looking through it. While you are actively using it, no other library member will have access to it.
If 15 minutes elapses without active use, the book is "put back on the shelf" and another patron will have access.
-
-
Select the eBook title to display the View This eBook page.
-
The eBook is displayed.
-
Use the navigation buttons along the top of the browser screen or the table of contents and search options along the left side of the screen to browse the book.
