The file contains two United States Office of Price Administration War Ration Books. The books are from the fourth series of ration books. Both books still contain some of the stamps.
In the spring of 1942, a few months after the U. S. entered WWII, the Office of Price Administration issued ration books to all U. S. residents. The Office of Price Administration was in charge of rationing all consumer and other goods during the war. Ration books contained stamps which were used to purchase food, gasoline, and other items. Four series of ration books were issued: Book 1 in the spring of 1942; Book 2 in January of 1943; Book 3 in October of 1943; and Book 4 in late 1943. Most ration restrictions were ended in August 1945, at the end of WWII.
