Biographical Sketch

Juanita Davis Brooks was raised in Irving; she graduated from Irving High School in 1951. She married her classmate, Billy Joe Herring, in June 1951. The couple raised their children in Irving.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of seven Irving related-items and four digital images. It is arranged in four series and housed in one flat box and one ½-manuscript box.

Series I, School Material, consists of an Irving High School Tigerette drill team uniform from the 1950-51 school year. The parts of the uniform include a gold satin jacket with black braid across the front, a gold satin pleated skirt, and gold satin briefs. The hat is not included. The series also includes a “spirit shirt” from the 1950 football season. The “spirit shirt” is a men’s long sleeved dress shirt that is decorated in a football theme and was worn by the donor on game day during the week of the game against Garland High School. Also included is a binder with an Irving Tigers decal on the front, 1950-51.

Series II, Directories, is made up of two Irving telephone directories, c. 1949 and 1957. The c. 1949 directory contains a foldout map of Irving and vicinity, 1948, a page of facts about the city of Irving, and advertisements from Irving and surrounding area businesses. On the cover of the 1957 directory is a sketch of the Irving Youth Center that had recently opened. Today the building is the Senter Park Recreation Center.

Series III, Irving-Related Items, consists of a movie schedule for the Irving Theater and the 183 Drive-in Theater for the month of February 1954; and an Irving Bank & Trust Company cash bag, c. late-1960s.

Series IV, Digital Images, is made up of four images: an Irving Elementary School class, 1923; Juanita Davis Brooks in her drill team uniform, 1950, and in her graduation cap and gown, 1951; and Lila Leona Avrett Davis, the donor’s mother, c. 1930.
