What do I need to provide to the city in order to obtain a sign permit?
Sign permit application; illustrations of proposed signage, illustrations of any existing signage on platted lot; site plan with proposed or existing location of signage; proposed setback from property line; height and size of existing or proposed signage.
How long does it take to get a sign permit?
If all information required is provided and there are no unusual circumstances, a sign permit can be processed within a couple of days or less.
If my sign permit is denied, can I file a variance?
There is a variance process provided the sign was not erected prior to first obtaining a permit. The variance process can take 6 to 8 weeks depending on the nature of the variance. Packets are available in the Building Inspections department by request.
Do I need to be registered as a Sign Contractor?
Yes. There is a $100 registration fee. It is renewed annually.
Is the Sign Company or Contractor required to be bonded?
Yes. Each Sign Contractor is required to provide a $5,000 bond to the City of Irving or $300,000 of insurance
If I am installing new electrical to a sign, is an electrical permit required?
Yes. A separate electrical permit is required and the contractor must be licensed and registered with the City of Irving.
Is there a permit required when re-facing an existing sign?
Yes. Any changes to an existing sign must be permitted.
Can I increase the height or size of an existing sign?
In most cases, this will not be allowable. The only time this might be permitted is when the existing sign, once increased in size and height would meet the requirements of the existing ordinance, including height, size and setback.
I heard there were banner regulations included in the new ordinance. What are they?
Businesses are limited to one banner per 300 feet of linear frontage; there are setback restrictions size is limited, and condition of the banner is regulated.
Can I install or paint a roof top sign?
Painted or Attached roof signs are prohibited.
