Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  Where can I get a copy of the code books?

A:  Most of the code books can be found in the library for reference or can be purchased at a large bookstore or ordered from the International Code Council.

Q:  What is the plan review/permit process?

A:  Clink on the link on the left that says Commercial Permits or Residential Permits.

Q:  Where do I find parking calculations?

A:  The Zoning Ordinance has that information.Speak to a Planner in Planning and Inspections at (972) 721-2424.

Q:  How many plans examiners are there?

A:  A total of five: two specialize in residential and the other three mainly review commercial plans.

Q:  I just applied for a new commercial permit. How do I get an address assigned?

A:  When you submit for a building permit, it is part of the plan review. It will be sent to the applicant with the plan correction list.

Q:  How do I document that my building plans are in compliance with the International Energy Conservation Code?

A:  Energy compliance for new commercial buildings and new single-family dwellings can be more easily determined by downloading and using free software available at www.energycodes.gov, a Department of Energy website. A ResCheck is required for residential and a ComCheck is for commercial projects.

Q:  Do you have a fast track process so that the plan review process can be sped up?

A:  Unfortunately, we do not have that process. We take plans on a first come/first serve basis.

Q:  How long will my permit take to get approved?

A:  Residential remodels/additions are done at the counter and new houses take about three to four days. Commercial remodels take about a week and new commercial buildings and additions take about three weeks.

Q:  What are the two biggest items that will hold up my permit?

A:  Platting and Zoning. If you are adding a building to a property, please check with a Planner in Planning and Inspections at (972) 721-2424 to make sure your property is platted and is zoned for what you want to do. Those two things can delay a permit for at least two months.

Q:  I have a question that I cannot find an answer to on this Web site. What do I do?
