Q. What is the Building and Standards Commission?
A. The is Building and Standards Commission is a quasi-judicial commission.
- Consists of five seated members and five alternate members.
- The members of the commission are residents of the city
- Members are appointed by City Council to terms of two (2) years.

A The Building and Standards Commission enforces the provisions of
- Chapter 8, Uniform Building Code
- Chapter 8A, Minimum Standards for multi-family properties
- Chapter 8B, Minimum Standards for 1,2 3 Family & Manufactured Homes
- Chapter 8C, Minimum Standards for Manufactured Home Communities
- Chapter 8D, Minimum Standards for Hotels & Motels
Q. Who is on the Building and Standards Commission
A. According to Chapter 8B,ArticleII., Sec.8B-7 The city council will attempt to ensure that the Commission consists of :
- One (1) professional engineer
- One (1) architect
- One (1) realtor
- One (1) real estate appraiser
- A member of the general public who is a homeowner.
- Each of the positions has an equally qualified alternate.
Q How can a substandard property be eliminated?
A.
- Initial complaint filed with the Code Enforcement Division.
- The Environmental Health Inspectors investigate the property
- If the property has a condition(s) that constitutes a dangerous and substandard structure,
- The owner will receive a notice stating what must be done to correct the condition and a time frame in which the corrections must be completed.
- The owner’s failure to comply with this notice will result in the case being set before the Building and Standards Commission in a public hearing.
