Greener, Cleaner Traveling Habits for the Summer

Greener, Cleaner Traveling Habits for the Summer

Traveling in and out of North Texas this summer? The travel industry is one the fastest growing industries in the world. It’s more important than ever for travelers to minimize their individual impact on the world’s air quality. Wherever you and your family are heading, consider traveling a bit cleaner this summer and help the world breathe a little easier.

Traveling green takes some extra effort at first, but it can become a healthy habit for families to develop. Here are some tips to help with the change:

  • Reduce your carbon footprint and participate in alternative transportation options like biking, walking and taking public transit in the city or countryside. These alternatives are often less expensive than calling a cab or renting a vehicle.
  • A plastic bottle often travels thousands of miles before it gets to you. Carry a reusable container to drink locally sourced water when you’re on the go. • Traveling by plane? A significant percentage of a plane’s carbon emissions come from takeoff and landing. Consider booking a non-stop flight to help the different cities around the world reduce emissions.
  • If the family is staying at a hotel, look for one that offers environmentally friendly certifications or memberships in green industry associations. Recycling, reducing water waste and conserving electricity would help develop money-saving habits beneficial to children and adults alike.
  • When renting vehicles for vacation, choose a hybrid or a fuel-efficient vehicle. Oftentimes, “free” upgrades to a bigger vehicle ends up costing you more at the pump. If your personal vehicle is a gas guzzler, consider renting an economy car for your road trip. You’ll save on gas and avoid putting extra miles on your own vehicle.

One person making a small, positive change can inspire others to follow suit. The power of more than 6 million North Texans working together can make a great impact in making our home a cleaner, more breathable place.
