***According to the U.S. Fire Administration, electrical malfunction is the leading cause of home fires year after year.***

The Irving Fire Department asks that everyone please keep these ELECTRICAL safety tips in mind:

  • Replace or repair damaged or loose electrical cords. Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician.
  • Avoid running extension cords across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use only.
  • In homes with small children, make sure your home has tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles.
  • Avoid overlapping outlets. Plug only one high-wattage appliance into each receptacle outlet at a time.
  • Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should NOT be used.
  • Place lamps on level surfaces, away from things that can burn and use bulbs that match the lamp's recommended wattage.
