Do your children like visiting the South Irving Library’s Discovery Zone/Family Place?
It is an absolute game changer in the area of early literacy to have such an engaging feature at the library. We also have a whole assortment of learning toys for youngsters ages 1 to 3 that we bring out for special events, such as the Family Place series called Discover with Me. If you haven’t already visited these events with your child, we highly encourage you to come. The series continues this spring for five weeks at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays between April 13 and May 11 at the South Irving Library, 601 Schulze Drive. Enjoy stimulating and educational activities during a time of unstructured play.
There is plenty to see and do for young children and adults at Discover with Me. Caregivers can read board books to their child from our special collection. In addition to books, interact with a pint-size puppet stage, an assortment of adorable soft puppets, age-appropriate Lego blocks, musical instruments, large wooden play structures, balance bicycles, tunnels, puzzles and lacing toys. The purpose is to establish a pattern of family play time which aims to stimulate young minds and develop family bonds.
Discover with Me is mostly fun and games, yet the series also provides an enormous support for parents. Sometimes a worried mom, dad or caregiver needs someone to assure them that their child is hitting all the right milestones, or to receive a referral to someone who can provide a professional diagnosis. Each week a childcare specialist from the areas of literacy, play, language development, nutrition, safety, and overall child development are invited to observe the attendees. Parents can take this opportunity to talk with the specialist, ask questions and listen to advice gleaned from years of experience.
