The City of Irving seeks an open-minded, forward-thinking leader with strong decision-making skills to serve as its next Chief of Police. This is a great opportunity for an experienced, well-respected law enforcement professional to guide a police department through a period of transition and growth. As Irving continues to progress and develop, the new Chief of Police will utilize best practices and strategic planning processes to help the City successfully adapt to existing and future changes.
The chosen candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and must have 10 or more years of experience in a department of comparable size and complexity, preferably in a culturally diverse, urban environment. Previous experience as a Chief of Police or Assistant Chief is required. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university and successful completion of an advanced Police Management/ Administrative Development Program (e.g., FBI National Academy, Southern Institute for Police Administration, Senior Management Institute, Texas Law Enforcement Management Institute, etc.) are preferred qualifications. IPD is a Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 143 Civil Service City and the selected candidate should be familiar with administration and discipline under Chapter 143.
A candidate licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) must have Master Peace Officer certification. A candidate licensed in another state must have the equivalency of Master Peace Officer certification and meet the minimum standards for initial licensure by TCOLE.
