Training Process

training
New Irving Police Department recruits will attend the Basic Training Course at a regional police academy within the Dallas / Fort Worth area. This training covers a variety of academic and investigative subjects and lasts approximately five months. Several tests will be administered during the training process to help applicants understand materials covered.
Upon completion of the basic police training, the recruit receives an additional nine weeks of training at the Irving Police Training Academy. This training includes Irving Police policies and procedures, additional firearms training, defensive tactics, city geography, Spanish language, and tactical procedures along with other courses. This in-house training program offers new officers the opportunity to learn advanced police techniques.

Following this training, the recruit will enter the Police Training Officer (PTO) program which consists of working with a police training officer in the patrol division for 16 weeks.

Irving Police Training Academy

Gym
The facility includes a full-size gymnasium with free weights and a separate, enclosed area containing various types of workout equipment.

Pistol Range
The indoor seven-lane pistol range for training and qualification is complemented by a separately operated state-of-the-art "PRISim" shooting simulator.

Meeting Rooms / Classrooms
A large training / meeting room can accommodate groups of up to 50. For "break-out" sessions or multiple uses, the room can be partitioned with a retractable wall. Additionally, the Academy has three state-of-the-art classrooms with theater-style elevated seating for up to 32 persons each.
